With more than a whiff of McCarthyism, a Tory MP (and government whip) wrote to universities across the UK asking them to supply him with details of who on their faculties teach about Brexit and the contents of the syllabus.

Tory is a nickname for the Conservative party.

Tory was the original name of the Conservative party, before they pleged to follow a policy of progressive reform.

It was a derogatory nickname used by their opponants and in an early form of enpowerment it was adopted as the official Party name, just a Whig was by the opposing party.

Tory was an Irish term for an outlaw.... A man on the run.

Whig was a Scottish term similar in context to Cracker. A poor cattle driver.
