Yes, where is the punishment for all who knew and did nothing?

Like when Fox News renewed Bill O'Reilly's contract after finding out he settled a harassment suit for $32M?

This was in the midst of the Ailes scandal, and Fox was publicly saying they were cleaning up their corporate culture. Instead, they were offering a multi-million dollar per year contract to a man they knew had settled at least six sexual harassment claims.

A settlement is not the same as being found guilty in a court of law...

...nor is it necessarily an admission of guilt.

Yes, lots of people pay 32 million dollars to people who falsely accuse them. Sure.

For context, that's over twice what Bill O's yearly salary was before the contract renegotiation ($18M/yr.), and still more than a year's pay after the new contract ($25M/yr.).

On the one hand, there's a utility in public shaming, on the other, I know men that have had their lives ruined by being falsely accused of rape. Likewise, the person's family can also be shamed and ostracised.

I've had discussions about this. I think overall that the public needs to be more responsible and skeptical with such information, because atm it's just a total mob mentality that is more destructive than useful.

I think in Weinstein's case, the benefit of the doubt has been over extended.

Yes that does seem to be the case. I was talking more generally

I think generally it seens that men gain a reputtuion for this kind of thing before it is taken seriously. Though I do remember one case when a musicl instrument teacher was arrested at our school when he tried to push his hand down a young boy's trousers.. He claimed it was an exercise to open up the diapragm and allow his breathnng to flow. Something he had clearly thought out. I wonder how many 12 and 13 year olds didn't tell their parents about that.

In other news I spelt diaphragm right first time.

Everyone knows the diaphragm is in the trousers!

Are you saying that, if there are rumours circulating, there must be some truth to those rumours?
26 days ago - Wednesday 10/25/17 - 1:06:53 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, I'm saying if there are persistant rumours, it is a duty of care for those rumours to be taken seriously if and when someone comes forward and makes an actual complaint.

Like in the case of Jimmy Saville. Numerous pople made complaints about his behaviour and were told just to avoid him where possible. This led him to believe he was never going to be reproached and he became even more predatory.

Yeah, I hear you.

On the other hand some of the historical investigations seemed to be rather pointless, digging up stories of personalities that squeesed some girl's ass at a party 35 years ago. But there are links to (once again) rumours of systematic abuse within local governments. In Rochdale children were actually taken from their families and placed in "care" homes to order. Purely for the abusers to gain access to a partculalrly attractive child. In a Jersey children's home victims were systematically murdered after being farmed out for abuse by visisting padophiles from the mainland. I think the links between people that there are rumours about might hold more important clues about how these organized padophile rings operate.

it's never good to be publicly shamed. but on the other hand, i see people who get away with bad behavior consistently because we can't publicly shame them. i asked why they blurred out the names of people saying terrible things, they said because they didn't want the person to be part of a witch hunt. but we should still hold people accountable. it's really a tough call either way.
