Why is it spelled "consensual"? Shouldn't it be spelled "consentual"? Because consentual implies consent. Consensual implies sensuality.

"Consensual" and "sensual" are unrelated. Consensual comes from consensus, so the S makes sense.

Oh. Thanks for the lesson! I learned something today.

Which is damming, certainly, but I'd still prefer a trial before having my life ruined.

Not that I'm saying, or even thinking he's innocent, but I am a believer in due process.

Due process is a legal concept, not one that necessarily applies to a private employer parting ways with an employee. And in fact, many companies/organizations have "morality clauses" written into contracts, which specifically say they can fire you because whatever you're accused of doing would hurt the company financially or reputationally.

The Asia Argento one is so telling. He forced himself on her once, and then she describes future sexual encounters as "consensual"—but goes on to say that she "felt like she had to" because he could ruin her career, or because he was helping her with childcare expenses. That is NOT "consensual." But victim-blaming/shaming is so prevalent and normal that even victims do it to themselves.

So guys, don't have sex with women, because even though you think it's consensual, in her mind it is not.

Sounds like women can claim rape anytime they like, because even though they didn't resist or say no or stop, that's what they were thinking.
1 month ago - Tuesday 10/10/17 - 4:47:53 PM EST (GMT-5)
OR, you could just not use your power and influence to coerce women into having sex with you, because that is gross, and rapey, and definitely not consensual.

We don't know that he did use his position to coerce her. Not saying he didn't, but we don't know.

Right, all the dozens of women who are accusing him of this, independently of each other, are lying. Sure.

Eh, I'm just talking about this one "Asia Argento". She herself describes the encounters as consensual. But ... but .... in retrospect I want to change my story.
1 month ago - Tuesday 10/10/17 - 5:01:58 PM EST (GMT-5)
Well first of all, she doesn't describe the FIRST encounter as consensual.
Secondly, she still describes the later ones as consensual, but my point is that she ALSO says she felt pressured because of what he could do to her career, and later, because he was paying for her child care. She is saying both things are true - that she didn't say no at the time, AND that she didn't feel she had a choice. She is not using the word 'rape' to describe those encounters, but *I* am pointing out that coerced consent is not actually consent.

I am pointing out that it is unfair to the man in the situation if she doesn't somehow let him know she doesn't want sex. Especially if it's more than one encounter.
1 month ago - Tuesday 10/10/17 - 5:08:42 PM EST (GMT-5)
Do you just not understand how it's possible for someone to not feel they have the choice to say no in a situation like that? F*ck being unfair to him. He's a serial predator who picked on actresses who were on the edge of making it big BECAUSE he knew his clout in the industry would make them feel unable to turn him down. That was not an accident or a coincidence; it was his M.O., over the course of DECADES.

Let me just say the obvious- look at this f*cking guy.

I'd live in a cardboard box before I'd even think about hooking up with him.

The big reason I hate that argument is it invites the inverse one: that a rich, successful man who was attractive can't be guilty of rape because "why would he NEED to rape anyone, I mean look at him!"
I know that's not what you're saying, but it's a common argument when it comes to athletes, actors, musicians, etc. who are accused of things like this.

No, I'm not saying that, but c'mon.

This guy isn't just unattractive, he's f*cking gross.

He's not attractive, I just don't really think that's relevant to anything he did.

Hillary finally got around to denouncing Weinstein. I'm surprised she didn't suggest the women could be mentally unstable or that they have a tendency to seek out older men.

Feeling like you can't say no is different then having the conscious ability to say no. She could have said no, but she chose not to. That of course doesn't excuse rape on any level or what Weinstein is accused of.
1 month ago - Tuesday 10/10/17 - 7:32:21 PM EST (GMT-5)
Do you mean it's "different than NOT having the conscious ability to say no"?
Because yes, those two situations are not exactly the same, but that doesn't mean coerced "consent" is actually consent. Which means both situations are equally viewed as rape or sexual assault.

I am not denying that it is rape, but she could have said no. She chose not to because of her career. She was coerced, but again, she could have said no too.

Here's an idea: you could stop victim blaming
