Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price apparently spent $500,000 on tax-funded military aircraft travel for him and his wife, Betty Price, in addition to previously-reported private charter flights, according to a report in Politico.

Price announced earlier Thursday that he would be repaying the federal government $52,000 for private charter planes he took, a new report emerged that the White House approved more than $500,000 in taxpayer funds for military jets for business travel to Africa, Europe and Asia this year.

Politico also reported Price spent more than $400,000 on private charter planes on routes that often had commercial flights available. Price pledged to repay the government for his seat on domestic travel earlier Thursday.

The "reimbursement" of $52k is only for HIS seat on those flights, which accounts for only about 1/8 of the cost. The travel cost for his aides, staffers, etc. will apparently be paid by taxpayers, even though none of those expenses would have been incurred had Price flown commercial (which was usual for previous HHS secretaries).

Drain the swamp, right guys?!

More from the article:

"The HHS inspector general is already investigating the secretary's travel. But Price isn't the only cabinet member under scrutiny. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) head Scott Pruitt's non-commercial flights have cost more than $58,000 to taxpayers, as CBS News reported, and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin is under scrutiny by the Treasury Department's inspector general for his reported use of a government plane to view the eclipse in August."

He threatened to fire him unless he paid back taxpayers.

So....

"We'll see"

Same thing Trump says every time he doesn't know how to answer a question. Same thing he said when asked about Jeff Sessions. Hardly a threat of firing, but nice try.

But oh well, just a million dollars of misspent taxpayer money, amirite?

If i’m Trump I let Price’s head roll. If this is just his spending on transportation they are going to be looking at every traction down to packs of gum on what he may have purchased.

He then looks tough, which is important to him and get an ethics type feather for his cap.

I move Carson to hhs secretary. Appoint some city manager from one of the top 10 cities to HUD. Someone low key.

I appoint duke to DHS to keep continuity while the hurricane fall out is going on. She’ll get hammered in confirmation about Puerto response but gets confirmed. Plus it gives him someone to boot over the slow PR response. He likes shifting blame so might as well line up a scapegoat.

The problem is it isn't just Price. Mnuchin and Pruitt are both under scrutiny for similar things.

It's almost like the culture of grifting starts at the top...

Yeah I know. I rewrot my post because it disappeared on my phone. I was orignally think price as a sacrificial lamb to try and take the heat off.

He needs to give the sec treas room as this tax cut things move forward, with out the go to question being about his travel.

Looks like Zinke too

http://www.politico.com/story/2017/...

Plus he just put a big buck hunter world arcade cabinet in the cafeteria at interior. The game runs $4,000.

Probably not the most prudent purchase.

Yeah and Zinke claims they were all necessary, and he only used chartered/military planes when commercial flights weren’t available.

But that’s what Price said for days, too, until people kept investigating and he eventually had to admit that what he did was improper. He lied about it until he couldn’t lie anymore.

Is there an autotune in that?

i agree, ben carson should be moved to HHS, since he's well known for being a doctor. more of his element.

I wouldn't trust him to run that department well at all
1 month ago - Friday 9/29/17 - 6:07:20 PM EST (GMT-5)
I don’t expect he would run any departments well. But I can see him move there as a Dr. and as he’s already confirmed. If he is able to be moved without reconfirmaton then you don’t have to get someone new hammered over health care during confirmation. Saves yourself the proxy war.

It doesn’t work that way. Carson would have to be re-confirmed (any secretary moving to lead a different department would).

The relevant oversight committees are different for each cabinet-level position, so he’d have to go through that first, and then the full senate would have to confirm him. Same as a brand new person.

Well there goes the shortcut I would have tried to take..

lol, Mick Mulvaney actually sent a memo to all cabinet secretaries/heads of departments saying the president’s chief of staff (John Kelly) would have to personally approve any non-commercial flight requests (this is not usual for other administrations).

He actually started the second-last paragraph with “Put another way, just because something is legal doesn’t make it right.” He actually had to SAY that. To cabinet secretaries. This administration is such a f*cking joke.

I just found it a little funny to see Trump criticizing Price for spending money on travel, especially to places where Price has property. Like.... Heh. Okay, Mr. Mar-a-Lago every other weekend.

No, you’re right, this weekend (and last weekend, and quite a few other weekends) he’s at his golf course in New Jersey instead. Tweeting about how the mayor of San Juan is a “poor leader,” while he tries to shave a couple strokes off his handicap and her people continue to go without food, water, power, and medical care.

What would you suggest he be doing instead?

Having someone help him write his resignation letter. I hear Nixon’s was short enough to fit in one tweet.
