Uber will not be issued a new private hire licence, Transport for London (TfL) has said.

TfL concluded the ride-hailing app firm was not fit and proper to hold a London private hire operator licence.

It said it took the decision on the grounds of "public safety and security implications".

Confirming it would appeal against the decision, Uber said it showed the world "far from being open, London is closed to innovative companies".

TfL's concerns include Uber's approach to carrying out background checks on drivers and reporting serious criminal offences.

I was surprised to find that uber rides were about the same cost as taking a black cab in London.

They ramp up the fares at what they consider peak times. When Uber started operating it was really cheap but the rates doudled within 6 months.

It's complete bullsh*t how they're allowed to operate.
Good for London.

I don't understand people who work as uber drivers full time

they are just making money for a company which is actively trying to put them out of a job

You might, if you lived in a smallish town that has a university (and bar scene), but no real taxi service to speak of. The Uber drivers in my town make crazy money.

Yeah, small towns don't have a plethora of taxis for people to use, so I could definitely understand it there.

I've only ever taken uber in Vegas and it was awesome. We also took cabs there and had a good chat with one.

The uber was wayyy less expensive than a cab. It was about $15 or 29 bucks to get from our hotel to the hospital. And we took an uber back (because we couldn't get a cab!) and it was $5 back to our hotel.

Anyway, we don't have uber here. The cabs are really against it.

I think they need better regulations before I would want them here.

They do well in the D.C. area, too, partly because the cab companies there are well-known for their scummy practices. For a long time (until maybe 10 years ago), there were city "zones" (boundaries drawn by the cab companies, ofc), and taxis charged more for crossing into different zones, rather than anything standard/knowable like mileage or time. And drivers would purposely take routes that crossed into as many zones as possible. It was a racket and everyone knew it, but with metro closing after midnight, there wasn't really an alternative.
Uber has surge pricing and stuff like that, but at least you know upfront, and get an estimate of what your ride will cost.

Cab companies loooove to complain about how Uber isn't fair to them, while at the same time defending their own sh*tty (and in some places, organized crime-connected) practices that they've been engaging in pretty much since taxis were a thing.

Lol organized crime??
Tinfoil hat much?

The only organized thievery is from the government that rapes can companies and has for years, but turns a cheek to uber because "it's an app", so apparently it doesn't need to meet all of the requirements that livery cabs do. The under the table sh*t they did to get where there are is insane.

It's well-documented, particularly in the Chicago area, and especially several decades ago, when taxicabs were an entirely cash-only business.

So does the 'several decades ago' mean that they are no longer involved with organized crime?

It means I don't know the answer to that.

If you are going to accuse them of defending the practice, shouldn't you be sure that they are actually engaging in the practice?

There have been accusations of similar conduct in other cities more recently. I just don't happen to know about Chicago.
