Spain's Guardia Civil police have detained 14 Catalan officials and raided regional government ministries involved in organising a banned independence vote.

Tensions were already high before Josep Maria Jové, number two in the Catalan vice-presidency, and others were held.

Thousands of Catalans took to the streets in protest and the regional leader complained of a power grab.

let's hope the catalans have the balls to do what the Scottish didn't.

One of my team is Catalan - I've just arranged extra leave so she can go home to protect the polling booths with her friends.

She already voted by post, but apparently the streets are filled with police from the rest of Spain and the military, who are finding any excuse to turn people away, snatch their ballot papers and generally intimidate.

It's gonna get super ugly.

Wow, this is getting messy - looks like the Spanish government is panicking about it, could backfire?

I've only been learning Spanish a month or so, and have very little idea about the situation there yet - anyone got a good overview of what is going on and might happen soon? (Ideally in English, though I did manage to follow some reporting of the Mexican earthquake earlier...)

700 mayors are under investigation for helping organize the referendum.

Spain was ruled by a dictator until 1975.

I'm very suspious of all these nationalist/regionalist movements. I was glad the Scottish independence vote originally came out the way it did because that was a Yes for a joint effort. Now, after the Brexit vote that was a vote for isolationism, the Scots - imho contrary to the Catalans - actually do have a good reason for separation from the seperators.

And round up the British expat pensioners around Lloret de Mar.

Police moved in to prevent voting. 337 people were wounded so far.

Over 700 now.

I saw videos earlier of firefighters trying to protect voters from the police. And police going into polling places, grabbing ballot boxes, and taking them.

The Spanish government could have let this play out peacefully, and disregarded/ignored the results. They didn’t have to do this, and now the pictures and videos are everywhere and no matter what anyone thinks about Catalonian independence, Spain look like the aggressors.

Feel like I'm watching Gangs of New York seeing some of the footage.

Felt to me like watching a third world dictatorship, attacking those that speak out etc. So strange to see that in a country like Spain.

Spain was under dictatorship up to 1975.

There is a real far right threat pretty much everywhere in the Western world.

Again.

Yep - this is mad. Using brute force like that can only backfire, surely - I can't even imagine the outrage if the government had tried to use the police to shut down voting by force.

I'm pretty sure most of our police would have had a short answer for any government that tried to order that, too. Some of them use excessive force sometimes - but "beat up those voters"?! No.

Are you kidding? Look at the miner's strike. Cops here love beating up unarmed civilians as much as cops anywhere.

Well, Madrid f**ked that up good and proper. Expect Catalonia to make a UDI in the next few days.

Then the fun REALLY starts.
