Yes, crazy stupid move on their part.

They could just have let the vote go ahead and ignore it as legally invalid - instead, all the heavy-handed stuff upped the stakes and got the other side sympathy they didn't already have. Now, it's already crossed the line into violence, and Madrid gets at least a chunk of that blame - what on earth were they playing at?!

There is nothing in Spain’s constitution that might allow a smooth transition.

Catalonia’s options are limited.

Such a contrast with here, too - we all knew Cameron was anti-Scottish-independence in 2014, but if you'd suggested he'd send goons to beat up voters, you'd have been laughed at.

I've never visited Spain (yet) - but this is hard to understand. On the other hand, it's all too easy to imagine Northern Ireland getting violent over similar questions, so...
