"Britain will end the free movement of labour immediately after Brexit and introduce restrictions to deter all but highly-skilled EU workers under detailed proposals set out in a Home Office document leaked to the Guardian."

I'm going to secure my Irish passport BEFORE they tell LiJas she needs to start wearing a yellow star...

Seems like a bit of an overreaction - do you actually object to the idea of the government trying to prefer highly skilled EU immigrants over low skilled ones, like they already do for non-EU countries?!

Of course, since this will be run by the same department we had to explain the concept of a PhD to a few years ago, I wouldn't expect them to be able to identify any actual skills anyway...

Yes, I object to them imposing restrictions on FoM of any sort for EU citizens.

The ID card thing for EU citizens is also objectionable and worrying.

ID card? I'm expecting some sort of visa, like any other immigrant. Remember, they do need to have and show an ID card or passport to get into the UK in the first place anyway...

What's your actual argument for freedom of movement, excluding your wife?

From a purely classical capitalist pov free movement of Labor is an essential part of a truly free market - but I don't think he would be one to quote Adam Smith. But that is an argument for it.

Oh and if it were to follow the route of non EU spouses (which it wouldn't because PR) he would have to be working at a job making over 20k a year before she can come (there was a loophole under European law but that will soon be closed).

Come/stay.

I dont believe the rights of EU citizens currently in the country have been guaranteed yet have they?

Britain is a horrible island full of xenophobic morons. EU labour fills a massive hole. Everything we do to them will be done just as fast to us. All our pensioners won't be shipped off to spain anymore and we won't have people working and going back at will. Instead we will have people foghting for passports, aiming to stay in the country by any means necessary and a growth in undocumented labour. Bet the taxman will love that.

The problem is the discussion around migration is so toxic and il-informed it is a pointless exercise. It doesn't matter what hein de Haas, stephen castles or a plethora of fantastic thinkers report as Farage will always get the attention and plaudets chuckling away in the corner like the court jester.

Working in china I know many many many familes stuck in the PRC because of Britain's backwards attitude to migration and now instead of solving their problems the government is causing issues for those unfortunate enough to fall in love with someone from the EU. F#cking sickening.

The problem from a purely economic POV is that young English people who work abroad tend to be better qualified, they need to be able to speak a foriegn languague after all.

FOM allows young Europeans, often from rural areas with little prospects to gravitate to big cities where they can spend a few years immersed in a bigger social scene as they work in low skilled jobs.

Many working class parents voted to leave the EU because they view this unequal exchange of low skilled economic tourists as a major obstacle to their own children getting any work experience at all.

We have absolutely no guarantees.

Being able to freely live, work and study in my choice of 28 countries was a wonderful thing. Having that taken away by the ill-informed followers of bigots, racists and chancers is just awful.

Didn't you get refused residency in Denmark?

BTW I'm driving to Copenhagin next week and coming back empty.

No, I had to leave because of a tax problem (my first employer didn't pay any) but there's nothing to stop me going back. Or at least, there wasn't.

There are few guarantees in life, but both sides of the negotiation have already agreed on grandfathered residency status, they're just quibbling over trivial details about what the paperwork will look like and if the NHS keeps paying for care for retireers in Spain or not. No chance of anyone getting kicked out, unless they're criminals.

It's really this simple: if you oppose any amount immigration in any manner for any reason you are a racist. If you support any kind of "immigration controls" you are a racist. Everyone who supports "Brexit" should be in prison.

It's funny as currently non EU spouses of EU nationals working in the UK currently have better rights than non EU spouses of UK nationals working in the UK.
(Of course the loophole being the UK national going to work in another European country for 6 months or so)

However all that is actually dependent on the Home Office actually knowing what the f*ck they are doing

Not so much "funny" as "wrong and stupid", but hopefully that'll stop in 2019. (Seriously, what idiot ever signed up for that arrangement?!)

The Home Office has a rare, perhaps even unique ability to screw up in every possible way. My colleagues at university once had to explain what a PhD is to them... the government department supposed to assess whether or not qualifications are sufficient, and they don't even know what qualifications are?! You couldn't make it up.

THE guardian has been reporting all the CR@p coming from the home office. 2019 is going to be a sh#t show and a PR disaster. The bungling will be brutal.
