I thought about putting this in sports, but it's really a larger issue, pertaining to the university establishment moreso than just sports. After all, Maddow ran with the story.

" A proposal to build a $7 million Wildcat Coal Lodge was approved Tuesday by the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees in a 16-3 vote.

The vote set off shouts from about 30 protesters, mostly students, who attended the meeting."

A few points:

- Wildcat mining defines a specific illegal procedure, according to one of the dissenting board members.
- The current building is named for Joe B. Hall, a former coach, and much of the uproar was about that in particular.

Seriously, though? It just sounds f*cking terrible. "Wildcat Coal Lodge".

One student has commented that W. T. Young Library should be named "Peanut Butter Library" to follow the pattern, in pointing out the absurdity of slipping an industry or product name into a university building's name as such.

This is just stupid. Coal has played a huge part in Kentuckys' history. I dont understand the problem.

So have the bourbon and horse industries, but somehow donors from those industries are more than happy to simply have buildings named eponymously, as opposed to some vague salute to industry.

As an aside, too, at least people who make their fortunes from horses donate to the hospital complex or university-proper, and not trying to advertise through an already gluttonous basketball program. I'll give them that they can throw their money wherever they like, but that doesn't mean that the target for the money can't impact the resulting image.
