Perfect, me too. After Ch. 16 where they plot his death and he overheard it, I've grown even more wary of him.

I've reached ch.18. Shall we stick to 10 chapters again - til ch.26? It seems like a good pace so far.

I love the obscenitying in various milks too it's a nice change. One of the yt swear filters should change to that

I think 10 is doable!

So up to Chapter 27 this week?

18 looks long, but the others appear to be shorter- - definitely more doable than the last 10 chapters.

18 is long, but I finished it pretty quickly just now
Onward soldiers!

A couple chapters ago, I was considering destertion- - but was afraid that Pablo would hunt me down and kill me...

Pablo won't hunt you down, but I think Anselmo could

The story of Pablo and his village at the start of the war was so interesting. It shows that both sides did terrible things and now the rush has well and truly warn off and they are having to live with the thought of what they've done

I enjoyed the contest between Augustin and Anselmo in chapter 23, along with Robert's thoughts on soldiers who like to kill. I wonder which kind of soldier Hemingway was.

*Contrast, not contest

Also - Robert seems to think the bridge is super important, like it could be the turning point of the war (and if it truly allows them to capture Segovia, maybe he's right). Do you guys think it really is that important? I get this terrible feeling that he's been misled.

I imagine every little fight in those sorts of wars matters, because every little bit captured is a huge deal, both strategically and regarding keeping morale up in these volunteer guerrilla soldiers.
Maybe Robert needs to make the beidge a huge thing so that it puts pressure on him to get it right?
I suppose we'll find out

I've finally reached the action, and have to stop myself halfway through it!
I'm enjoying Agustin and Primitivo as characters these last few chapters

Do you think it's a matter of Robert being mislead, or is he just trying to play up his role in the war by overstating the importance of his duty?

That's what I'm trying to determine - I might go back and reread the conversation he had with Golz when he received orders to blow the bridge to determine that. The issue is that we read everything from his perspective so the entire account is somewhat skewed.

I think Robert keeps placing importance on the bridge to try and keep him aloof of the politics of Pablo's group.

I enjoyed seeing El Sordo's perspective in ch 26. It's good seeing this war from all the different perspectives

Are we reading another 10 this week?

I'm starting chapter 34.
4 months ago - Wednesday 7/12/17 - 7:56:35 AM EST (GMT-5)
There are only 43 chapters all up, and we've been motoring along. How about we go for broke and finish this thing?
4 months ago - Wednesday 7/12/17 - 8:17:01 AM EST (GMT-5)
I'm kinda ready to be done with it, but chapter 43 looks really long...
4 months ago - Wednesday 7/12/17 - 1:31:33 PM EST (GMT-5)
We can totally go for broke and finish it. I believe in you, Cowdung! You'll make it through chapter 43!
4 months ago - Wednesday 7/12/17 - 2:09:09 PM EST (GMT-5)
Where is everyone else? I am on Chapter 39 now.
4 months ago - Wednesday 7/12/17 - 2:48:23 PM EST (GMT-5)
I haven't read yet this week because I was working on school stuff. I'm starting the final stretch tonight.
4 months ago - Thursday 7/13/17 - 12:40:28 AM EST (GMT-5)
I'm just starting ch 28. I had to stop reading for a bit so as not to rush ahead too much
4 months ago - Thursday 7/13/17 - 2:27:01 AM EST (GMT-5)
Chapter 27 was pretty amazing. And weirdly funny? I don't know, but so far it's my favorite part of the whole book.
4 months ago - Thursday 7/13/17 - 2:40:35 AM EST (GMT-5)
I havent started.
