Sleepyhollow and I are going to be reading some books and talking about them, right here in this thread!
If you also wanna read the books and talk about them, feel free
But either way...

We're going to start with Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls
We're gonna talk as we go

Yay?

Sounds fun, although I will have to put off my reading of The Rape of Nanking to do it.

Are you starting today?
1 yr ago, 3 mos ago - Thursday 6/22/17 - 10:42:45 AM EST (GMT-5)
Yup, starting this week! We were planning to get through six chapters this week (as the chapters aren't too terribly long).

I'll give it a go- - I'm kinda down on the two books I'm currently trying to read. This might be a good break for me...
1 yr ago, 3 mos ago - Thursday 6/22/17 - 11:40:28 AM EST (GMT-5)
I want to play!
1 yr ago, 3 mos ago - Thursday 6/22/17 - 5:28:09 PM EST (GMT-5)
I thought this meant you guys would be reading books to us

but if I actually have to read I'm out

I'll make you an audiobook, Dissy. But I'll only be reading Twilight fan fiction.
1 yr ago, 3 mos ago - Friday 6/23/17 - 12:20:39 AM EST (GMT-5)
Awesome! I'll be checking this thread. I probably won't have time to join but I may add the books to a reading list for the future.

I'm halfway through the first chapter and am wishing I had studied the Spanish Civil War I don't think it's necessary, but I'm just the sort of person that likes background knowledge

I'm halfway through the first chapter, and I'm hoping this isn't one of those authors that use too many words...

Haaaaaaaaave you met Hemingway?

(of course not. He's dead. You get my point.)

I think I'm gonna also brush up on the Spanish Civil War. And maybe read a little on Hemingway. Otherwise I'm going to feel like I missed something.

Isn't he supposed to be known for his minimalist style of writing?
1 yr ago, 3 mos ago - Friday 6/23/17 - 1:23:30 PM EST (GMT-5)
...and this is the first Hemingway book I've tried to read.

i haven't read this hemingway, but i haven't found the hemingway i have read as easy to read as the things he says about the simplicity of writing imply they should be
they're still great. it's not a vocabulary thing though, just something about the style. or maybe i find things with more words easier
1 yr ago, 3 mos ago - Friday 6/23/17 - 1:51:07 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think the writing style is why I love to read Fante and Bukowski.
1 yr ago, 3 mos ago - Friday 6/23/17 - 2:24:39 PM EST (GMT-5)
Maybe I need to go back to 'one sentence' novels, like Dancing Lessons for the Advanced in Age by Bohumil Hrabal...
1 yr ago, 3 mos ago - Friday 6/23/17 - 3:36:44 PM EST (GMT-5)
What I'm seeing with Hemingway is that he repeats things a lot. I think it's part of his style but I don't know that it's necessary.

It's been years since I read this but really liked it, will be interested to hear your comments!
1 yr ago, 3 mos ago - Friday 6/23/17 - 11:08:39 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'm enjoying the writing style so far. It makes it easier to imagine all these people from different countries trying to communocate in a language that wasn't their first

I just finished chapter 1. I thought the end of the chapter was really gay...

Just finished chapter 2. Still not loving it, but moving ahead to chapter 3...

I must've missed all the man sex at the end of chapter 1!

I'm really liking the exploring of different mindsets and psychological events of the people affected by the war

He was lamenting how few Gays were lefr...

"All the best ones, when you thought it over, were gay. It was much better to be gay and it was a sign of something too. It was like having immortality while you were still alive. That was a complicated one. There were not many of them left though. No, there were not many of the gay ones left. There were very damned few of them left."

I remember now
Old books are funny
