I was thinking since travbowman is doing top ten lists, we could do a Stephen King top 5 list.

Here's a list of books

And my top 5:
1. Insomnia
2. Needful Things
3. Misery
4. The Stand
5. Different Seasons

7 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 6/29/10 - 11:01:44 PM EST (GMT-5)
I've only ever read two stephen king books.

Tommyknockers and
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon

So those are my choices. Haha.
7 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 6/30/10 - 1:28:52 AM EST (GMT-5)
1. Insomnia
2. Dark Tower Series (not going to limit to one book)
3. The Regulators/Desperation (love the cross referencing in all of his books, but these were really the pinnacle of that)
4. The Running Man from The Bachman Books
5. The Eyes of the Dragon (for my lost childhood. I also loved Clive Barker's "The Thief of Always" for the same reason.)

That was harder than I thought it would be.

(The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon had to be the worst. I don't blame you for stopping there immortal_1).

Insomnia? Seriously? That book was nearly as bad as Rose Madder (the low point of King's career).

In no particular order:
It
The Tommyknockers
The Dark Half
Cell
The Dark Tower Vol 1-5 (the last two books sucked Satan's balls. Metafiction is despicable)
7 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 6/30/10 - 6:01:05 PM EST (GMT-5)
Ha, well, I am not a big fan of The Tommyknockers, so there you have it. I've not read Rose Madder, so I can't say if I think your comparison is apt, but I loved the weirdness of Insomnia. The whole "extra dimension of reality" thing hooked me.

I have the Dark Tower series sitting on a shelf. I don't know why I haven't made time for them yet.
7 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 6/30/10 - 6:09:29 PM EST (GMT-5)
So far, there's only one short story by him that I like. Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption.
7 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 6/30/10 - 10:14:20 PM EST (GMT-5)
The Dark Tower
The Long Walk (written as Richard Bachman)
The Green Mile
The Stand
Misery
7 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Thursday 7/1/10 - 11:34:17 PM EST (GMT-5)
1. The Night Shift - I honestly think King shines better in his short stories as opposed to his novels.
2. It - Captures all of King's themes wonderfully while still being a good work of horror - a return to childhood nostalgia, and a weird obsession with sex.
3. The Green Mile - The best of King's "sentimental" work, IMO.
4. The Dark Tower: The Drawing of the Three - Yes, I'm picking one out of the series. This is the piece that tied the series together, IMO, but, as per Brunnen, going all-out meta ruined the series.
5. Misery - Speaking of meta, I love how subtly meta this one is. It can be done correctly.
7 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Friday 7/2/10 - 11:29:23 PM EST (GMT-5)
My top 5...

1. The Stand
2. Needful Things
3. It
4. Gerald's Game
5. Couldn't pick between Rose Madder or Misery. Or Insomnia! Maybe I'll go with The Dark Half.

Try 'The Bachman Books' - short stories he wrote under a psuedonym. Awesome ones in there, they are all great.

I heard an interview with King today on NPR. He was talking about Gerald's Game, explaining the premise. I'd heard of it before, but never what it was about.

7 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 7/6/10 - 9:10:45 AM EST (GMT-5)
oh, but Salem's Lot was also good. F*ck, I've read so much by Stephen King that this is actually really hard.
7 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 7/6/10 - 9:21:56 PM EST (GMT-5)
I've had Hearts in Atlantis sitting on a shelf for quite a while too. Bought it in a used bookstore with the intention of reading it. That, From a Buick 8, and the Dark Tower series.

And yet, here I am, re-reading The Stand.

I'll start a new one after.
7 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 7/7/10 - 7:25:28 AM EST (GMT-5)
Stephen King is excellent for when you just want to switch off. I really need to read more. I've only read Misery and Salem's Lot. I liked both. I'll be taking recommendations from this thread.
7 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 7/7/10 - 8:53:26 AM EST (GMT-5)
spooner, would it help if i told you insomnia and hearts in atlantis tie in to the dark tower? (well, most of his books do, but those stand out to me)

geez this would be easier if it were the least favorite. i'll have to think about this one a bit...
7 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Friday 7/9/10 - 10:58:34 AM EST (GMT-5)
Most of his books and the mini series "Kingdom hospital" over the last years have contained references to him being run over to a drugged driver.

I know, it was a very sad incident that changed his life (he can't sit down for more than a 20 minutes these days due to the pain), but I don't see the point of reminding us so often.
7 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Sunday 7/11/10 - 9:31:20 AM EST (GMT-5)
1. Carrie
2. Misery
3. Diff. Seasons
4. Gren Mile
5. It
7 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Sunday 7/11/10 - 2:15:46 PM EST (GMT-5)
