These books are great - although, unfortunately, the quality drops off some after the fourth book. I did enjoy all of them, but the first ones were the best.

Yeah, they do go down hill after The Waste Lands but I still love them. The last book does pick up a bit though.

I just bought Wizard and Glass. This series was the first I've read by Stephen King.
I haven't read the fourth one yet, but the previous books were really interesting.

I don't think that the quality decreased after the first books - I thoroughly enjoyed them all, which is unusual as I generally am not a big fan of King's writing.

I wish there is such a thing as a bumbler.

Oy is my best friend........ ive read now up to the end of Song of Susannah, and about 1/4th into The Dark Tower itself (book 7)

I have read them all, and I wish he would've finished writing them before he was hit by that van.

The Gunslinger is still one of my top three favorite books.

I cried like a small child reading the last 50 pages of The Dark Tower simply because I started reading the series when I was a teenager and when approaching the end, it felt like I was loosing forever the family that I had been waiting years for to come visit me again.

Sappy, I know.

Like Foxish, it's in my top 3.

me too! it took me much longer than it should have to read the last two. i just didnt want it to be over!

i think they were all great in their individual ways. wizard and glass is still my favorite though. i've read it four times. i liked learning about roland as a teenager. and i absolutely loved cuthbert.
these are by far my favorite all time books. i'm even going to get a tattoo of the ka symbal. (i know thats weird, but there is a good reason behind it though)

or symbol, if you spell correctly.
4 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Saturday 7/5/08 - 5:35:33 PM EST (GMT-5)
oh, and for those who have finished it, did you love or hate the ending?
4 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Saturday 7/5/08 - 11:27:46 PM EST (GMT-5)
From what I've heard, most people hate the ending/think it was a cop-out/etc.

Though I wasn't a huge fan of King's inserting himself into the story, I thought the ending itself was about as good as it could be. Few things would satisfy everyone, and, to me, the ending seemed very consistent with the series as a whole.

I wish I could go into more depth about what exactly I mean, but I haven't read it in awhile; I only remember that that's how I felt when I finished.

King's work has really gone down hill. These books are all right, but when you compare them with his earlier work, it's embarrassing. From A Buick 8 was the first sign, and his latest, Duma Key, is a boring piece of sh*t that recycles everyone of his writing clichés.

These are the only books of his that I can't stand

My bro has read them all he thinks there one the best hes ever read. I think ill give it a good long read.

Read the first 2 and a half. I cant stop reading them.

I haven't read Dark Tower or am a big Stephen King fan, but I recently borrowed 'Talisman' by Stephen King/Peter Straub and it was pretty good. Has anyone else read this one? My favorite character was Wolf.
4 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 8/10/08 - 1:32:34 AM EST (GMT-5)
I'm a big fan of King, but I've never been able to even get through The Gunslinger, mayhaps the Dark Tower series just isn't for me.

I The Talisman. But that whole part where they're in that Home with Sunshine Gardiner...I always want to skip through that chapter.

I never liked the Talisman either ... isn't it kind of like the Dark Tower series, or tied to it somehow? Maybe that's why I didn't like it.

Hated it. Loved the
continuous loop thing, that was an excellent twist.
but Damn it if it's one thing I absolutely DESPISE, it's
metafiction
.

It's the lazy tool of a hack, frankly I expected better from Stephen King.

But then, after sh*t like Rose Madder, Delores Claiborne, Gerald's Game etc etc, what did I expect?
4 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 8/16/08 - 4:20:52 PM EST (GMT-5)
i agree, the twist was excellent. so you didnt like
when roland met stephen? or the jumping from year/world to year/world?

let me ask you, what the hell was the whole
19
thing about? and i was disappointed that he didnt tell the story of when
cuthbert and alain were killed at jericho hill.

and agreed on rose, delores and gerald, those were just awful.

does the talisman tie into the dark tower story, or is it LIKE the story?
4 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 8/17/08 - 3:52:50 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think Rose Madder, Delores Claiborne and Gerald's Game were some of his best books! It and The Stand will always be my favorites but those were all really good. And Delores Claiborne actually turned out to be a decent movie too.
4 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Monday 8/18/08 - 1:06:50 PM EST (GMT-5)
delores was definitely the best of the three and the movie wasnt atrocious. but rose and gerald were incredibly boring and predictable.

Hated it felt like he took a right turn down Bullsh*t Boulevard and kept going.

I had no problem with introducing Father Callahan, in fact I quite liked that, but then it just got silly.

The worst part is, they're well written. They just don't GO anywhere.

I feel it ties in. Would you be surprised if one of the worlds Jack visited was Mid-world?
