anyone with music theory knowledge can you talk to me real quick - Mood:Good

my bro is attempting to learn improvisation, dig? he plays bass his method is to listen to solos and learn how to play them he got his idea for the method by reading a book on improvisation he read the intro and the guy says "i work by ear" so my bro says "oh great i don't have to think i can just NOODLE!" and he trys to make it seems like hes doing tough sh*t by moving away from rock solos and learning (not transcribing [which would help him on many other levels like reading and writing music]), but just memorizing) pop jazz music and this is all cool most great improvisers studied the solos of their influences except the difference is they studied they looked at the notes that were being played and they saw how they worked over the underlying harmonies am i wrong? and if not ill continue so my argument with him is you can't work by ear alone. you see this fly motherf*cker right here i mean you can describe me in a lot of ways but when you describe me, one word you almost HAVE to include is fly i am a fly mother drata but i wasnt always this fly infact it wasnt until a little under a year ago, around september, that i transformed into a fly mother drata I gotta say, things have been working out great since i turned fly so im just givin hope out there to all the kids, if you dont feel fly right now thats ok theres hope for you and one day maybe youll be this fly peace
